Mini Reflections

Writing and Reporting

This semester, I expanded my writing and skills by embracing new challenges and diversifying my approach in InFocus. I focused on developing my interviewing techniques, learning to ask more open-ended that encourage deeper conversations. Compared to last semester, I've become more at analyzing data and incorporating it into my stories, enhancing the depth of my reporting. Overall, these new experiences have not only improved my but also broadened my understanding of the various tools journalists can use inform their communities effectively.

Broadcast Journalism

In my journey through InFocus this year, I significantly improved my skills by experimenting with various interview techniques. This hands-on experience allowed me to refine my approach to crafting questions important insightful responses while maintaining a professional mentality. I learned to adapt my interviewing style to suit different subjects, ensuring that each conversation contributed meaningfully to the story., this practice enhanced my ability to create a comfortable atmosphere for interviewees, ultimately leading to richer and more engaging content.

Editing, Leadership and Team

Building

InFocus has significantly enhanced my skills in editing, leadership, and team building through collaborative journalism projects. I discovered the importance of accepting feedback from both editors and peers to refine my work. While working in groups, I honed my ability to communicate effectively, meet deadlines, and support my teammates. Even when I wasn't at the helm of a project I actively contributed by assisting with filming, writing, or editing. These experiences taught me that true leadership involves supporting the team and maintaining accountability. Through collaboration, I realized that strong teamwork leads to higher-quality journalism and fosters a more newsroom atmosphere.

Audience Engagement

This past year, I really started to see how important it is to connect with the audience. Reporting on things that affect everyone at school, like new policies or campus resources, showed me that people only care if the story matters to them. Over the last two semesters, I learned how to look at a story from a student's perspective and figure out the best way to make it interesting and easy to follow. Doing broadcast journalism taught me how much things like visuals, pacing, and tone change how people react to a video. By focusing on real student voices and actual campus issues, I tried to make my packages a lot more relatable and helpful. Looking back at the whole year, I definitely have a better understanding of how journalists build trust with their community, and I am excited to bring that into this new semester.

Design

After finishing this year, feel like I have a much better understanding of design from making broadcast packages and telling stories on InFocus. I learned how simple design choices, like how a shot is framed or how the clips are ordered, change how the audience understands a story. When I edited video packages, I really focused on the pacing, transitions, and making sure the video looked clean so it was easy and interesting to watch. Learning Adobe Creative Suite helped me see how text, graphics, and visuals should support the story instead of just distracting people. Through all of this, I learned that good design has to be done on purpose to help explain information clearly. Reviewing everything I've done so far, I definitely see how a good visual layout makes journalism a lot stronger, and I want to keep working on that this semester.
